The Grinnell Area Local Food Alliance (GALFA)

Project information:

GALFA seeks to connect local growers with institutional buyers and individuals interested in locally produced and environmentally friendly food products while providing farmers with additional marketing options.  GALFA also seeks to expand the community’s awareness of local food options, producers, and area availability.

Current projects:
• Summer intern. GALFA hires a student intern every year to learn about the local food system.
Grinnell College Student Garden
• Food Producer Directory. The new updated Directory of Grinnell Area Food Producers Who Market Locally is now available by calling or stopping by the office for The Center for Prairie Studies (641-269-4720) at Grinnell College, Stewart Library or the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce.
• Local Foods for Local People. A project led by students and community members aims to make the local food system in Grinnell more just and equitable. In the summer of 2008 they recieved funding from the Kathryn Wasserman Davis Foundation to subsidize CSA shares for four low-income families, host community cooking classes, plant edible bushes and trees in area parks, and hire three high school interns to work in a garden and greenhouse. Next summer, they will continue their efforts to institutionalize these programs. To learn more, go to: http://www.kwd100projectsforpeace.org/project.php?project=140
